Importance of Fasting on the Day of Ashura
Join us to know more about the significance and the misconceptions that people have about the observance of this day.
Ruling:
Ibn Abbas said ” I never saw the prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) more concerned about fasting than on the day of Ashura, and in the month of Ramadan.
On this day Moses and Noah were both saved from Firoun’s army and the flood.
Fasting is recommended on the day of Ashura and the day of Tasua’s, and they are the 10th and 9 the of the month of Muharam. This is due to the prophet محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم statement “وصوم يوم عاشوراء يكفر سنه ماضية” رواه مسلم
“And fasting the Day of Ashura expiates the previous year (i.e its sins, if major sins were avoided ).
And just as he صلى الله عليه وسلم fasted the Day of Ashura and ordered the people to fast it, he said ” فإذا كان العام المقبل ان شاء الله صمنا اليوم التاسع”
“When the next year comes, if Allah wills we shall fast the ninth day as well” narrated by Muslim and Abu Daoud. This means he recommended to fast a day before the 10th of Muharam or a day after it.
